Description
Christmas Crack Toffee is a crunchy, buttery, salty-sweet holiday candy layered with saltine crackers, golden toffee, rich chocolate, and festive toppings.
Ingredients
1 cup dark brown sugar (or light brown sugar)
1 cup butter
12 oz chocolate chips (semi-sweet, milk, dark, or white)
Saltine crackers (enough to cover a 9×13-inch pan; Ritz crackers may also be used)
Optional toppings: chopped pecans, sprinkles, crushed candy canes, or sea salt
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 400°F and line a 9×13-inch pan with foil.
2. Arrange saltine crackers in a single layer to cover the pan.
3. Melt butter and brown sugar in a saucepan, bring to a rolling boil, and cook for 3 minutes while stirring.
4. Pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the crackers.
5. Bake for 7 minutes until bubbly.
6. Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle chocolate chips over the hot base.
7. Let chocolate soften, then spread evenly like icing.
8. Add desired toppings such as nuts or sprinkles.
9. Refrigerate until set, about 2 hours.
10. Break into rustic pieces and serve.
Notes
Chocolate can be pre-melted in a double boiler or microwave for easier spreading.
Recipe works with either light or dark brown sugar.
Optional toppings such as pecans, sprinkles, or candy canes can be added to the melted chocolate.
Ritz or graham crackers can be substituted for saltines.
