Description
Southern green bean casserole is creamy, crispy, and comforting. Perfect holiday side dish with classic, cheesy, bacon, and gluten-free variations everyone will love.
Ingredients
Traditional: 4 cups fresh green beans trimmed, 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup, 1/2 cup milk, 1 tsp soy sauce, 1/4 tsp black pepper, 1 1/2 cups French’s fried onions
Cheesy: 4 cups fresh green beans trimmed, 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup, 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese, 1/4 cup milk, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 1/2 cups French’s fried onions
Bacon: 4 cups fresh green beans trimmed, 6 slices cooked crumbled bacon, 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup, 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 tsp smoked paprika, 1/4 tsp black pepper, 1 1/2 cups French’s fried onions
Gluten-Free: 4 cups fresh green beans trimmed, 1 can (10.5 oz) gluten-free cream of mushroom soup, 1/2 cup almond milk or substitute, 1 tsp gluten-free soy sauce, 1/4 tsp black pepper, 1 1/2 cups gluten-free fried onions
Instructions
1. Heat oven to 350°F (175°C).
2. Cook green beans in boiling water about 5 minutes until just tender.
3. In a bowl, combine soup, milk or substitute, and seasonings (plus cheese or bacon if included).
4. Stir in green beans, transfer to an 8×8-inch or 2-quart baking dish.
5. Add fried onions on top just before baking.
6. Bake about 25 minutes until bubbly and golden.
Notes
Casserole base can be assembled up to 24 hours ahead and refrigerated covered.
Add fried onion topping right before baking to keep crispy.
If baking from cold, allow an extra 5–10 minutes.
Frozen green beans can be used if thawed and drained first.
Vegan version can be made with dairy-free mushroom soup, plant-based milk, and vegan fried onions.
