Description

Sprinkle Buttermilk Bread is soft, buttery, and festive with red and green jimmies. It bakes tender and moist, perfect for gifting, brunch, or cozy Christmas mornings.

Ingredients

Scale

1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour (210g)

1 teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

½ cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled

1 cup granulated sugar (200g)

2 large eggs

1 cup buttermilk (240ml)

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

½ cup red and green sprinkles (jimmies only)

Optional: 1 tablespoon coarse sugar and extra sprinkles for topping

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line or grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan.

2. Mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl.

3. In a large bowl, whisk butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla and buttermilk.

4. Stir dry ingredients into wet just until combined to avoid overmixing.

5. Fold in sprinkles gently to prevent color bleeding.

6. Pour batter into loaf pan, smooth the top, and add optional toppings.

7. Bake for 45–55 minutes, checking at 40. A toothpick should come out clean.

8. Cool in pan for 10–15 minutes, then transfer to a rack to cool fully before slicing.

Notes

Use only jimmies sprinkles to avoid color bleeding.

Do not overmix batter to maintain a soft texture.

Fully cool the bread before slicing to avoid crumbling.

Can be baked as muffins (18–22 minutes at 350°F).

Wrap loaf in wax paper and twine for gifting.

Mini loaf variation: bake about 30 minutes.

Toothpick test recommended to check doneness.

Best stored airtight at room temperature for 3 days; refrigerate up to 1 week; freeze up to 2 months.

Buttermilk substitute: 1 cup milk plus 1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar; rest 5–10 minutes.

Flavor add-ins: white chocolate chips, walnuts, dried cranberries; or ½ teaspoon almond extract.

Pairs well with cocoa, peppermint tea, fruit, eggs, honey butter, or citrus slices.

Optional vanilla glaze: powdered sugar whisked with a little milk and vanilla.
